At some point, without any discussion, the fridge door became the head of the household.
Look at it. There is a calendar on it now, a real paper one, because two people needed to see the same thing at the same time and nobody trusted the phones. There are appointment cards under a magnet shaped like a strawberry. There is a lift rota in three different handwritings, one of them in pencil because that week kept changing. There is a laminated sheet somebody printed at work. There is a list of what is in the freezer, which somebody started with real enthusiasm and abandoned about eleven days in, and which is now wrong in ways that regularly disappoint people at half past six.
And holding all of it up, right in the middle, doing the actual structural work, is a painting a child did four years ago of what may be a horse.
Every family that has been through a hard season has had a fridge door like this. It is one of the quiet marvels of ordinary people, the speed with which a household reorganizes itself around a new fact. Within a fortnight there are systems. There is a person who does the phoning, because they are good on the phone and everybody knows it. There is a person who drives. There is a person who has become weirdly expert at car parking and now has strong opinions about it. There is somebody who took over the washing without ever being asked and would be genuinely surprised to hear anybody had noticed.
Nobody trained for any of this. It just assembled itself, and it works, and it is love with a laminator.
Here is what is not on the fridge door.
There is no line on that calendar for the last time anybody in this house prayed out loud with anybody else in this house. Not because it stopped mattering. Because it never went on a list, and everything that went on a list is what survived.
You could probably work out roughly when it stopped, if you sat down and thought about it, which you have not. In the first days there was a lot of praying. There was praying in the car and praying in a corridor and praying at three in the morning with your face in a pillow so as not to wake anybody. But it was all separate. Everybody in this house has been praying on their own for months, at speed, in fragments, and not one of you has heard another one do it.
And there is a specific reason for that which nobody has said out loud, so let it be said here. To pray out loud now, at this table, in front of these people, would be to let them hear exactly how frightened you are. They would hear it in the second sentence. They know your voice too well for it to survive.
So it did not stop out of coldness. It stopped out of love, of a tired and protective kind, and that distinction matters more than anything else on this page.
This one is yours. And nobody in this house is about to be told off.

Nobody called a meeting about it
There is a particular cruelty in how this kind of silence happens, and it is that no one ever decides it.
There is no evening on which a family sits down and votes to stop praying together. What happens instead is that meals stop being at the same time, because one person is out and one person is resting and one person eats standing up at ten past nine. The one who used to start things is the one who is unwell, or the one doing the driving, and nobody wants to take that job off them in case taking it looks like a verdict. Somebody tries once, and gets a few words in, and their voice goes, and the whole table pretends to be looking at something else out of kindness. And then, quietly, it becomes a thing this house does not do at the moment.
Weeks pass. Then months. And the longer it goes on, the higher the wall gets, because now anybody who starts it is also announcing that it stopped.
You are not being held responsible in Heaven for a silence nobody in this house chose. Scripture says He knows our frame and remembers that we are dust, which is a sentence about God taking a person's actual capacity into account, and the Holy Spirit is described as the one who helps us in our weakness rather than the one who audits it. Nobody upstairs is keeping a record of the evenings this house was too tired to speak.
And hear the thing underneath that, because it is the load-bearing one.
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.Psalm 34:18
Nigh means near. Not on the way. Not standing at the gate awaiting an invitation that got lost in the admin. Near, already, in the room where the fridge door is, on the exact days when nobody had the strength to say anything to Him at all.
You have not been out of His company for a single one of these months. The written word puts Him nearest to the broken hearted rather than nearest to the fluent, and the Holy Spirit was given as the one who stays, so the quietest season this family has ever had has also been the most heavily attended. The praying stopped. The presence did not.
There has been praying in this house the whole time
Here is something that will sound too good, so let it be shown rather than asserted.
Scripture says that the Spirit helps our weakness, because we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, and that He Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Read the middle of that again: we do not know what to pray. It is not written as a rebuke. It is written as a description of the ordinary condition of a believer, and it is the reason help was sent.
Which means the prayer under this roof did not actually stop when your household stopped hearing it.
You have had an intercessor working in this house on nights when not one word got said in it. His word says the Spirit makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God, and the Holy Spirit does not require a quiet room, a full table or a family that has its act together in order to do it. What went quiet was the part you could hear.
There is one more thing, and it is deliberately small, because small is what this house has capacity for.
Jesus said that where two or three are gathered together in His name, He is there among them. Two or three. Not a household in good order, not an evening set aside, not everybody present and nobody upset. Two people at a table with the plates still out is the quorum, and it always was.
You have everything required for this already, and the bar is two people and a sentence. Scripture puts Him in the room on the strength of two gathered in His name, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a badly said prayer at a kitchen table an actual meeting rather than a gesture. Nothing needs to be organized. Nothing needs to be repaired first.
So here is the turn, and it asks for almost nothing, because almost nothing is what is available.
Nobody has to restore the old routine. The evening this house used to have is not the entry fee, and trying to reinstate it is precisely what has kept anybody from starting. All that is needed is one short prayer, out loud, at a table, with whoever happens to be sitting there, in a voice that may well go.
Let it be badly done. Let it be four words. Let somebody else finish it or let nobody finish it. A prayer with a wobble in it is not a lesser prayer, and the people at that table are not an audience, they are the two or three.
And be plain about what is being said here and what is not. Nothing on this page promises that the illness in this house turns, or that a particular result arrives, or that a season ends by a date. That is His to decide and it is not ours to announce. Every appointment stays in the diary. Every bit of care that has been put into this family's hands stays exactly where it is, because that care is His provision too and nothing here is asking anybody to loosen their grip on it.
What is settled is the other thing. You have a God who came near to this house without waiting for it to become a praying house again. Scripture puts Him nearest the broken hearted, and the Holy Spirit has been interceding under this roof through every quiet evening, so the distance nobody in this family could get across was never actually there.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, at the table, before anybody clears the plates. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to speak over this house belongs to you already and exhaustion has never once reduced it. Scripture is what these lines rest on and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries them, so they are not a technique and they are not a form of words. Whatever He does in this household from here is His to decide, and however He answers, the speaking is ours to do.
- Silence that moved into this kitchen, your tenancy is over and this table is not yours to run. Scripture says the Lord is near to the broken hearted, and in the name of Jesus I open my mouth in this house tonight.
- Accusation that a family which stopped praying is a family that stopped caring, your case is dismissed and I will not hear it again. The written word says His Spirit helps us in our weakness, and a tired household is the exact place He was sent to come alongside.
- Father, You never left this house, not on the day everything got rearranged and not through one quiet evening since. I thank You, because Your Spirit has been praying under this roof in words nobody here could find.
