The chairs are in a circle, which is never a good sign.
Somebody visiting has just told their story and it was a proper one. There was a before. There was an after. There was a night that everything changed and a specific place where it happened, and when they got to the part where they said yes, the room went completely still, and somebody's mum at the back had to find a tissue. It was real, and it was good, and nobody in that room should hear a word against it.
Then the leader says the sentence. "Anyone else want to share what God has been doing?"
And the circle starts to move. Not fast. It moves the way weather moves, one seat at a time, and you can see it coming across the room like the shadow of a cloud on a field, and you have got maybe four people left to work with.
So you start doing the arithmetic.
Your story, in full, is this. You were about four. Or you were seven. Or honestly you do not know, because there was no moment, there was just a house where this was normal and a car seat you were carried in from before you could walk, and somewhere in there it stopped being your mum's and started being yours, and you could not put a date on that transition if somebody offered you money for it. There is no room in your version. There is no night. There is nobody weeping at the back.
And that thing happens where you start quietly editing. You think about the week you nearly stopped praying, and you wonder whether that could be shaped into something with a bit of a shape to it. You consider mentioning a worship night eighteen months ago where you felt something and then felt fairly normal again by the car park. You do not lie, because you would not, but you start hunting through your own life for a peak, and you cannot find one, and the circle is two people away now.
So when it gets to you, you say you will just listen tonight.
Here is the thing nobody in that circle says out loud, and it is why this is being written to you and not about you. You did not stay quiet because you had nothing. You stayed quiet because somewhere along the line you worked out that stories with a night in them count, and yours does not have a night in it, and you concluded that whatever you have got is a sort of provisional version of the real thing. A faith on loan from the people who raised you. A membership that has not been paid for yet.
That conclusion is wrong, and it is not a small thing to be wrong about, and there is a young man in the New Testament who would want a word about it.

The letter that never asks for a story
Timothy was young enough that people used it against him, and he was leading a church.
Paul writes him two letters, and the second one opens like a man writing to somebody he loves and may not see again. And in the middle of the opening, before any instruction, before anything about doctrine or courage or the hard people in that city, Paul reaches for the thing he wants Timothy standing on.
When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.2 Timothy 1:5
Read it slowly, because there is a lot in a short verse.
He names two women and a kitchen. That is Timothy's testimony: a grandmother, then a mother, then him. No road, no light, no voice, no night that split his life into a before and an after. Somebody made him breakfast and told him about God, and years later he is a leader in a church and the apostle who taught him is writing it down as the foundation under everything.
And look at the adjective, because Paul chose it deliberately. Unfeigned. It means unmasked, unacted, not put on. It is the word you would use about a face that is not performing. Of every possible thing to say about a faith handed down through a household, Paul says the one that answers the exact accusation you have been quietly making against yourself: that a faith you did not dramatically acquire might not really be yours.
You are holding the real thing and not a copy of somebody else's. Scripture calls a faith that arrived through a grandmother and a mother unfeigned, which is a word about it being genuine rather than a word about how it got there, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a household's faith land personally in a young person rather than sitting in the family like furniture. Paul is persuaded it is in Timothy also. Not the family's faith on loan to Timothy. In him.
Later in the same letter he says Timothy has known the holy writings from a child. From a child. Paul says that as a credential, in a letter about standing firm when things get hard, to a leader who is currently in charge of grown adults.
You have known things since you were small that a great many people spend their thirties trying to find. The written word treats a faith learned early as a strength and never once as a shortfall, and the Spirit of God has been at work in your ordinary Tuesdays for years, quietly, without producing a story you could tell in a circle. Long does not mean shallow. It usually means the opposite.
Nobody is graded on the size of the arrival
Let us be straight about the other stories, because this is not a competition and the last thing anybody needs is a piece that quietly puts down the person who wept in the circle.
Those stories are true. God does turn a life over in a night, and He has done it to people you know, and when He does it, it is glorious and it should be told and the room should go still. Nothing here downgrades that by a millimetre. If He ever does something like that in your life, it will be His to do and His to time, and it is not a stage anybody has to reach, not a rung on a ladder, and not something owed to you that has gone missing in the post.
But notice what makes any of those stories worth anything. It is never the volume. It is who showed up.
You were chosen before the loud people were, and before the quiet ones, and before anybody had a story at all. Scripture says He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world and adopted us according to the good pleasure of His will, and the Holy Spirit is named as the seal on that, which means the paperwork on your belonging was finished before your grandmother was born. A quiet arrival into something that ancient is not a small arrival. It is just a quiet door into a very old house.
And there is a reason your version has no night in it. A faith you cannot date is a faith you have never been able to point at and say: there, that is where I earned it. Which means it has never once been about what you did in a room. That is not your weakness in this. As far as Heaven is concerned it may well be the strongest thing about your position, because there is nothing in it that can be taken off you by a bad week.
You have a shepherd who knows you by name and did not learn it from a testimony night. His word says the good shepherd knows His own and His own know Him, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that mutual, so what you have is not information about God, it is a person who is known. Nobody in that circle can grade that. Nobody in that circle can see it either.
So here is what to do with the circle when it comes round to you next time.
Nothing about your faith needs upgrading before it can be spoken about. You do not need a night. You do not need to find a peak in your past and dress it up so it has a shape. If it never had a starting gun, then the true version is simply that: this has been true as long as you can remember, and it is yours now, and it did not come off anybody else's shelf.
That is not a lesser testimony. It is a harder one to say out loud in a room that has just heard fireworks, which is a different thing entirely, and saying it anyway takes more from you than the fireworks took from anybody.
You have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and He does not do provisional. Scripture calls Him the guarantee of what is ours, and a guarantee that could quietly lapse because a young person never had a dramatic evening would not be a guarantee at all. Whatever God chooses to do in your life from here is His to decide, and however He answers, none of it is the thing that makes you His. That was settled long before this circle ever met.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, on your own, standing up. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, which is not something the circle grants and not something a story earns, and the standing to speak this is yours right now. Scripture is what these lines rest on and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries them, so they are not a formula and there is nothing magic in the order. Whatever God does next in your life is His to decide, and however He answers, what is said here is already true.
- Circle that comes round to me, your question does not decide who I belong to, and I am done rehearsing a louder version. Scripture calls a faith that arrived through a grandmother unfeigned, and in the name of Jesus I tell mine plainly.
- Verdict that says a faith with nothing dramatic in it is a smaller faith, your ruling is overturned and I am not carrying it into another year. Paul wrote to a young leader that he had known the holy writings from a child, and he wrote it down as a strength.
- Jesus, You called Your own by name on a shoreline and in a garden and at a kitchen table, and You called me. I thank You, because nothing quiet about the calling ever made it small.
