Quiet HopeProverbs 13:12

The Answer That Came for Somebody Else

This message is for watching other people receive the thing you asked for, and not being bitter about it, just tired

It happens near the end, when the chairs have already begun to shift.

Somebody at the front says there is one more thing, and then says the name, and then says the news, and the room makes that sound. You know the sound. It is not a cheer exactly. It is a low warm collapse, thirty people going oh at slightly different moments, and then the clapping starting late and unevenly because nobody organized it.

You make the sound too. And this is the first thing to say, before anything else in this piece: you meant it. That was not a performance. Something in you genuinely lifted when the name was read out, because you know what that family has been through and you have prayed about it yourself, by name, more than once.

Afterwards you go over. You say the right thing and you say it well, and you mean that too. You hold the arm for a second. You say the sentence that somebody who has actually waited knows how to say and somebody who has never waited never quite gets right.

Then you get in the car.

And nothing dramatic happens in the car. That is the part nobody warns you about. There is no storm and no crying and no argument with God on the ring road. There is a flatness, a sort of gray neutrality that arrives about two minutes after you pull out, and you drive home in it and put the kettle on and it is still sitting there at eleven o'clock.

At some point that evening, if you are honest, you went looking for the bitterness. Not to indulge it. To find it. Bitterness would at least be something with edges: a thing with a name, a category, a way to confess it and put it down. So you searched properly, the way a person goes through a pocket they are certain they left something in.

It was not there.

What was there was tired. Eleven years of the same prayer said in about forty different ways, in the car and the shower and the small hours, no answer either way, and today somebody else's name was read out. Not instead of yours. That is not how any of it works and you know it is not how it works. But the two things sat down beside each other in that room anyway, the way they always do.

I am not going to tell you that your turn is next. Nobody knows that, and anybody who says it is handing you something they cannot pay for. I want to talk about the tired, because Scripture talks about it, and it does not talk about it the way you have been talked to.

The Answer That Came for Somebody Else

What God put in the book about waiting

There is a verse people quote for its second half and almost never for its first.

Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.Proverbs 13:12

Hope deferred maketh the heart sick.

That is not a warning about a bad attitude. It is a diagnosis, and God put it in the book. He could have said that deferred hope builds character, or refines faith, or teaches patience, and there are places in Scripture that stand in that neighborhood. Here it does not. Here it says the heart gets sick, and it says it flatly, the way a doctor names a condition without holding any moral opinion about the patient.

You are not failing at hope, and the flatness in that car is not unbelief. Scripture itself says that hope deferred makes the heart sick, and it adds not one syllable of blame to the sentence. The Holy Spirit is the One who breathed that line onto the page, and He put the sickness on the record precisely so that nobody would have to pretend it was not happening to them.

Notice what that does to the accusation you have been half carrying for a while. Somewhere in the last few years a suggestion arrived, and it probably arrived in a kind voice: that a person with real faith would not be this worn down by it. It is not true, and one verse in Proverbs is the shortest disproof there is. God says the waiting makes a heart sick. He is not remotely surprised by the state you drove home in.

You have been carried through eleven years by Someone who never once asked you to enjoy them. Scripture says He giveth power to the faint, and Isaiah 40 puts the giving on Him and the faintness on us with no embarrassment at all about the arrangement. The Holy Spirit is named as the One who helps our infirmities, and helping is a word that assumes there is something there to be helped.

What hope is actually the size of

Here is where I want to be careful, because this is the exact point at which a lot of writing goes wrong and hands a tired person a promise that nobody can pay out.

Hope, in Scripture, is not a prediction. It is not a confidence about what the circumstances do next. If it were, hope would be a guess, and a guess that has been wrong for eleven years would have been worthless a long time ago.

The word does something else with it entirely. It puts hope in a Person and then puts the Person inside you: Christ in you, the hope of glory. It calls hope an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast. An anchor is not a forecast. An anchor is a fixed point. It does not tell the boat what the weather is going to do, and it was never designed to. It holds the boat while the weather does whatever the weather does.

You have an anchor and not a forecast, and it is holding at this moment in weather nobody would have chosen. Scripture calls hope an anchor of the soul, sure and stedfast, and Hebrews 6 fastens the far end of it inside the veil where nothing local can get at it. The Holy Spirit is called the earnest of it, which is God's own word for a deposit already paid down on something already decided.

That changes the size of the thing you are being asked to carry. Hope that has to be a conviction about outcomes is enormous. It has to be hauled up every morning like a flag, and on a wet Tuesday in the eleventh year there is simply not enough of a person left to haul it. Hope that is a fixed point somewhere else is small enough to hold in one hand. It goes to work with you. It goes into a room where somebody else's news is being read out, and it does not have to be defended to anybody in there, including yourself.

You are not required to feel a particular way in that room. Scripture says we sorrow, but not as others which have no hope, and 1 Thessalonians 4 puts sorrow and hope inside the same sentence without either one canceling out the other. The Holy Spirit is not standing at the door of that meeting marking your face.

The breakthrough

The tiredness does not have to be repented of, and it does not have to be argued with.

That is worth stopping on, because what tired people usually get handed is a job. Cheer up. Believe harder. Look at everything you do have. All three make the same mistake, which is to treat exhaustion as a wrong opinion that could be corrected by better information. It is not an opinion at all. It is what happens to a heart that has stayed open for a very long time, and staying open is the harder and the better thing, and it costs exactly what it costs.

You have kept your heart open for eleven years, and that is not a failure of faith but the evidence of it. Scripture says the Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit, and Psalm 34 puts His nearness where the sickness is rather than where the celebration is. The Holy Spirit does not wait outside the flat gray evening; He is what makes the flat gray evening survivable from the inside.

And I am not going to tell you what He does next, because I do not know, and because the moment a piece of writing promises an outcome it has stopped being honest with the very person it says it is helping. What is settled is not the circumstance. What is settled is that the anchor is holding, that hope has a name and the name is Christ, and that a heart made sick by waiting has not done a single thing wrong.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, on your own, in whatever room you are actually standing in. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, which is why hope has a name in this house and does not rest on a result. Proverbs 13 is where the words come from, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes a line about a sick heart and lands it as mercy rather than as a verdict. However He answers, and whenever, the outcome is His to decide, and the anchor underneath all of this does not move with it.

  1. Long wait that has made my heart sick, you are named in the book of God and you were never a verdict on His face toward me. Scripture says hope deferred makes the heart sick and adds no blame at all to the sentence, and in the name of Jesus I set down the shame I have been carrying on top of you.
  2. Fear that I have been passed over, you have no claim on somebody Scripture calls an heir according to the promise, and the Holy Spirit says so over me on the drive home. Get out of this car. What He gave another house He never once took out of mine.
  3. Lord, You are the hope itself and not only the One who answers it, and Christ in me is the hope of glory. Thank You, because You have never asked me to be less tired than I am, and You have never let go of the far end of this.
