Nobody Showed Me the Shape of It

This message is for wanting to pray with your children when your own father never prayed with you, and not knowing the shape of it

The routine is immaculate and you could run it in your sleep.

Teeth by twenty past, and the teeth are a negotiation, but it is a negotiation with known terms. Pajamas, which happen in the wrong order roughly half the time and are not worth dying on a hill about. Two books, because one book was never once in the history of your household actually one book. The lamp. The particular soft toy, which lives under the pillow and must be located before the light goes off or the entire evening resets.

And then the doorway.

You stand in it with your hand on the switch. And for about two years now, most nights, you have been meaning to say a short prayer with them before you turn it off. Nothing elaborate. Ten seconds. You have thought about it in the car more times than you would admit to anybody, and you have a version drafted, and the version has been revised. It has been revised in the shower. It has been revised while driving past the school. That draft has now been through more editing than most published work and it has never once left your mouth.

Because what actually happens is this. You get to the doorway, your hand is on the switch, and the four year old sits bolt upright and asks whether a shark could beat a crocodile. And you say probably the crocodile, because you are an honest man and the crocodile has the bite. And the eight year old says something from the top bunk about tomorrow being non uniform. And the moment, which was never a moment so much as an intention, quietly leaves the room. And you say night night, love you both, and you turn the light off, and you stand on the landing for a second longer than you need to.

You can address a room of thirty adults at work. You can chair a meeting where people disagree. You have said hard, direct, necessary things to grown men. And you cannot get four words out over a duvet.

Here is the part that is not funny at all.

Nobody ever did this with you. Not once. Your dad worked, and he came to things, and he was in the house, and he was not a cold man. He simply did not have this, and nobody handed it to him either, and behind him there is a long line of good men who also did not have it and did their best with what they were given. There is no villain anywhere in this story. That is what makes it so hard to talk about. It would honestly be easier if there were.

So when you stand in that doorway, you are not summoning courage. You are trying to reproduce something you have never seen. There is no memory to copy. There is no picture in your head of a man doing this, no cadence, no length, no idea whether your eyes are meant to be open, no sense of how you get from talking about a shark to talking to God without the whole thing landing with a thud.

You know the doorway.

Nobody Showed Me the Shape of It

A shape was missing, never the will

Let us name the thing accurately first, because the wrong name has been on it for two years.

This has never been reluctance. A reluctant man does not draft. A reluctant man does not revise a ten second prayer in the shower for two years running. Everything about the last two years says that the will has been there the whole time and something else has been missing, and the something else is a shape: a form, a length, a first sentence, the ordinary domestic knowledge that gets passed from a household to a child without anybody teaching it deliberately.

That is a real absence and it is not your fault, and it is not your father's character on trial either. Shapes get passed down. When one is not passed down, the person standing at the end of the line has to receive it from somewhere else, and the whole question is whether there is anywhere else to receive it from.

There is.

For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.Romans 8:15

Look at where the first word comes from in that sentence. Not from an upbringing. Not from a household that modeled it. The cry comes up out of a person because the Spirit of adoption is in them, and Abba is the domestic word, the one a child uses at home rather than the formal one used in public.

You have already received the Spirit who says the first word for you. Scripture puts the cry of Abba on the inside of the believer and attributes it directly to the Spirit of adoption, not to anything inherited from a family. The Holy Spirit is the one who supplies the word a man was never taught at his own kitchen table.

And there is a second thing, and when I first noticed it, it undid something in me.

The twelve did not know how to do this either.

Lord, teach us to pray.Luke 11:1

Grown men. Devout men, raised inside the faith, who had prayed all their lives in a culture soaked in prayer, and they came and asked to be taught the shape of it. And nobody in that account is embarrassed. Nobody says they should have known. He simply gave them one, and the one He gave them is short. You can say it in under half a minute.

You are a man who is asking, and Scripture puts asking at the front of everything anybody was ever taught about prayer. The written account has the closest friends He had requesting a form, plainly, out loud, without shame attached anywhere in the text. The Holy Spirit does not treat a request for the shape of something as evidence against the man making it.

Short is the shape

Now the practical half, because a doorway is a specific place and a shark is a specific obstacle.

The prayer He taught them is astonishingly brief. Read it out loud sometime with a stopwatch. Whatever a family prayer has to be, length is not it. And the draft that has been in revision for two years is almost certainly four times longer than it needs to be, which is precisely why it has never survived contact with a four year old.

Here is what a shape can look like, and it is not a rule and it is not the only one. Hand on the duvet. Their name, out loud, because a child hearing their own name spoken to God does something no explanation does. One true thing about the day, which can be that it was hard or that it was good or that there was a lot of shouting about teeth. One short sentence handing them to God for the night. Amen. That is it. Eleven seconds, and about eight of those are the name and the true thing.

It will come out badly the first time. It should. Anything genuine that a person has never done before comes out badly, and your children will not grade it, because they have no idea what it is supposed to sound like either. You are the first person in this line to do it, so there is no comparison available to anybody in that room.

You were handed the shape as a gift and never as an inheritance, which means nothing was lost before you got here. Scripture gives the form on request rather than by descent, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves it from a page into an actual bedroom on an actual Tuesday. What was missing at your father's table was never a requirement for yours.

The breakthrough

The line stopped somewhere behind you, and this is the place where it starts again.

That is not a burden being handed over and it is not a performance anybody has to pull off. It is simply the spot on the line where this generation is standing. The thing that was not given to you is being given to your children by a Father who has it in unlimited supply and has never once been short of it, and He is not asking you to manufacture it out of a childhood that did not contain it.

And let me say the thing this article refuses to do, because you may be braced for it. Nobody here is holding up a family that gets this right. There is no ideal household in this piece. There is no picture of a father who does it beautifully every night and whose children sit still. Those houses are largely a rumor, and comparing yourself to a rumor has cost you two years already.

You are a father with something to hand on, and the having of it does not depend on where it came from. Scripture says the Spirit of adoption is already in you crying Abba, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an inherited gap irrelevant to what happens in your house tonight. He is not waiting for you to have a better model to copy.

Whatever He does with your children, and He is at work in them in ways that have nothing to do with your performance in a doorway, is His to decide.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, on your own, before anybody is at the table. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to speak in your own house has already been given to you, and it does not depend on what was or was not modeled for you in another house years ago. Scripture says the Spirit of adoption cries Abba, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries that from a page into a doorway. Speak to the doorway and to the fear, never to your father and never to your children, and whatever He does in them is His to decide.

  1. Doorway at half past seven, you are not a stage and you have never once required a script. Scripture says the Spirit of adoption in me cries Abba, Father, and in the name of Jesus I open my mouth in this house before the light goes off.
  2. Fear that I have nothing to hand on because nothing was handed to me, you are named now and you are leaving this landing. Jesus gave the twelve the shape the moment they asked for it, and the written word never once requires a man to have been shown a thing before he is allowed to give it, so in the name of Jesus I put you out of my doorway.
  3. Father, You have never asked me to reproduce something I never saw, and You are the One who put the first word in my mouth. Scripture says the Spirit of adoption cries Abba, and I thank You, because You are teaching my children by the same Spirit who is teaching me.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
