Quiet HopeRomans 8:25

You Still Say the Name

This message is for holding on for somebody in your family with no sign of anything changing

It used to be a proper prayer. It was paragraphs, once. Whole ones, with Scripture in them, said kneeling.

Then it got shorter. Not from carelessness. It just wore down the way a step wears down, and after a few years it was sentences, and then one sentence, and now most days it is a name, said out loud in a kitchen with the tap running, or in the car at a set of lights, or in the dark before sleep. Just the name, and then a pause, and then whatever comes next in the day.

You have stopped telling people. That happened gradually too, and for a reason you would not say unkindly, because they meant well every single time. But there is a face people make. The head tilts, and the voice drops a register, and then comes the question about whether there has been any news, and there is never any news, and by the end of it you are the one doing the comforting. So you stopped. It was easier to carry it than to keep explaining that nothing had happened again.

The name is written in the front of your Bible. It has been written there more than once, because the first pen went through the paper, and the second one faded, and the current one is in your handwriting from a few years ago and looks like somebody else wrote it.

You notice dates that nobody else notices. Not birthdays. Other ones. The month it started. The last good conversation. The day something might have turned and did not.

And the report, after all these years, is exactly the same report. Nothing has changed. There is no sign of anything changing. There is no development, no phone call, no softening you could point to and say there, look, that.

So here is the thing nobody has said out loud to you, and I think it should be said gently and directly.

You have begun to wonder whether the hoping itself is a habit you cannot break rather than a thing with anything in it. Whether you are being faithful or simply being slow to accept something. Whether all this time you have been holding a door open in a house where nobody is coming, and everybody around you has quietly worked that out already and is being kind about it.

That is the thought. And it deserves a straight answer rather than a comforting one.

You Still Say the Name

Hope Was Never a Forecast

Start with what the word actually means, because almost all the pain in this comes from a definition nobody checked.

But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.Romans 8:25

Read the verse just before it as well: hope that is seen is not hope, for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for. Paul is being precise. By definition, hope has nothing visible in it. The moment you can see the thing, it stops being hope and becomes sight.

Which means the sentence there is no sign of anything changing is not evidence that your hope has failed. It is a description of the conditions hope was designed to work in. Sign and hope are alternatives. You do not get both at once, ever, and the absence of the first is not a comment on the health of the second.

You have been holding the real thing, and its emptiness of evidence is what makes it the real thing. Romans 8:25 defines hope as the posture held toward what cannot yet be seen, and the Holy Spirit is named a few lines later as the one who prays underneath a person when the words have gone, which is a strange thing to promise a believer who was expected to have news by now.

But now the harder half, and I am not going to soften it, because a soft answer here would eventually cost you more than a true one.

Christian hope is not a prediction. It is not optimism with a verse on it, and it is not a quiet certainty that the outcome you want is on its way. Anybody who tells you that your years of praying have built up a guarantee is offering you something the Bible does not offer, and one day that promise will break in your hands and you will conclude that the whole thing was false, and it was not false. It just was not a promise.

What hope actually is, in that verse, is a settled confidence in a Person, held toward a future He controls. It is anchored in what He is like. It is not anchored in a forecast about what happens in your family, because no such forecast was ever issued to you or to anybody else.

You have never once been the mechanism. Scripture says it is God that worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure, and Philippians 2:13 puts the working inside a person where only He can reach, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does it, on His own timing, in a room that is closed to everybody else including you. Nothing in that person's life is waiting on the quality of your praying. If that were ever true, the gospel would be a cruelty, and it is not one.

The Name in Your Mouth Is Not a Small Prayer

Now I want to defend the thing that has been going on here, because I suspect it has been quietly downgraded in your own mind.

A name, said out loud, with a pause after it, is not a lesser prayer. It is not what is left over when the real praying ran out. It is what praying becomes when it has been going on for long enough to have shed everything that was for the benefit of the listener.

Jesus told a story specifically to this end. Luke introduces it with the point already attached: he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint. And the woman in it does not say anything new. She goes back and she says the same thing again, and the whole force of the story is in the repetition. Nothing about her prayer improves. She simply does not stop.

You have kept a name in your mouth for years, and that is one of the oldest forms of faithfulness there is. Luke 18:1 sets continuing prayer against fainting rather than against eloquence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept a name coming up out of a tired person at a set of traffic lights for years, which is not a habit and never was.

And there is something worth knowing about how God feels about that person, though it has to be handled honestly. Scripture says He is not willing that any should perish. That sentence tells you what He is like. It does not tell you what happens next, and I will not pretend to you that it does. What it does is settle the question you have never quite dared ask, which is whether God has got tired of this person before you did.

He has not. He is not standing on the far side of your prayers being persuaded. He was there before you started, and He wants that person more than you do, which is a strange sentence to read when you have wanted them for a decade, and it is true anyway.

You were never asked to change anybody's mind, and you were never given the right to. The written word says every one of us shall give account of himself to God, and Romans 14:12 keeps a person's own answer where it belongs, between them and Him, and the Holy Spirit deals with a human will without overriding it, which is the whole reason this takes as long as it does. We ask. We bless. We do not aim a prayer at somebody's will like a lever, because love has never worked that way and God has never worked that way either.

The breakthrough

Here is what is actually settled, and it is smaller than the thing that has been asked for all these years, and it will hold on a day when nothing else does.

The outcome is not settled. I am not going to tell you that person comes home, or softens, or picks up the phone. I do not know, and nobody who claims to know has been given information the rest of us lack.

What is settled is the Person you have been holding onto while you hold that name. He has not tired of them. He is not waiting for better prayers. He has not been keeping score of the years, and He is not measuring your hope against its results, because He never issued results as the test of it.

You are held while you are holding, and that has been the arrangement since the first morning you said that name. Scripture says the eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms, and Deuteronomy 33:27 puts the arms underneath rather than out in front, and the Holy Spirit has been the weight under this the whole time. Nothing about that depends on news.

So hope does not have to be loud today and it does not have to be confident today. It has to be small enough to carry, which is exactly the size it has worn itself down to, and that is not a decline. That is what a thing looks like after it has been carried for years by someone who did not put it down.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, sitting down, wherever you usually say the name. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so this standing is yours and it does not rest on anything having improved. Scripture is what these lines rest on, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes them land. Whatever He does about the person you are carrying is His to decide, and however He answers, He wanted them before you did.

  1. Years with nothing to report, your silence is not a verdict and it was never an answer. Scripture says hope that is seen is not hope at all, and in the name of Jesus I stop reading an empty page as the end of the sentence.
  2. Fear that my hoping is a foolishness I am too slow to put down, your case rests on results and God never made results the test. The Lord is not willing that any should perish, and He has not tired of the one I am carrying, and He was in this long before I was.
  3. Lord, You put the everlasting arms underneath and not out in front, so I am held on the days I have nothing to hold. I thank You in the name of Jesus, because You want this person in my family more than I do, and the outcome was always Yours and never mine to produce.
