You set it yourself. That is the first thing, and almost nobody notices it.
Not a parent's alarm going off down the landing. Not somebody knocking on your door. Yours, on your own phone, set by you on a Saturday night, probably named something so that when it goes off you know instantly why a Sunday is starting this early.
And then the whole operation, which you could do in the dark and mostly do. The third stair, because of the noise it makes, so you go over it or you put your foot on the very edge. The toaster on the lowest setting, because the pop is the loudest thing that happens in that kitchen before nine. The tap turned on gently instead of properly. Your shoes carried, not worn, all the way to the front door and then put on outside on the step, which is a skill, and you have got good at it, and nobody has ever seen you do it.
You know exactly how long the walk takes. You know which bus and what happens if you miss it. You know the precise minute you have to leave to be there before the doors, and you have never told a single person any of this, because there is nothing to tell. It is just Sunday.
And nobody in that house is stopping you.
That is the strange part and it is the reason this is hard to explain to anybody. There is no story here. Nobody argues with you about it. Nobody has ever been unkind about it or made a face. They are not against it. They just do not come any more, and I am not going to guess at why, because it is not mine to guess at and it is not yours to hold an account of either.
So there is no drama, and there is no persecution to push against, and there is nothing anybody would call hard. There is only a warm quiet house behind you at ten past nine on a Sunday, and one person in it out on the step with their shoes in their hand.
Nobody has ever asked you what that costs. So I am asking.

He Called a Boy by Name in a Quiet House
There is a night in Scripture that belongs to you more than it belongs to most of the people who preach on it.
A boy is asleep in the house of God. It is night. The old priest is asleep in his own room. And the text says something bleak about that whole period before anything else happens: the word of the Lord was precious in those days, which is a way of saying it had gone rare, and there was no open vision. Not much was happening. Nobody was expecting anything.
And a voice says the boy's name.
He gets up and goes to the old man, because obviously he does, and the old man says he did not call and sends him back to bed. Twice more. Three times a boy crosses a dark house because he keeps hearing his own name, and three times he is sent back, and the third time the old priest works out what is going on and tells him what to say if it happens again.
Speak; for thy servant heareth.1 Samuel 3:10
Look at who God talked to. Not the household. Not the man with the office and the robes and the years. The boy. And He used his name, twice over, the way you say a name when you actually want the person and not the room.
You were called by your own name, and not by your household's. 1 Samuel 3:10 has God going straight past the responsible adult in the building to the one who was actually listening, and the Holy Spirit has never changed that habit since; He deals with people one at a time, personally, and He has never once needed a family to be unanimous first.
And here is the line most people read straight past. Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, neither was the word of the Lord yet revealed unto him. He did not know Him yet, and God called him by name anyway. Being early is not the same as being unqualified. The knowing came after the calling, which is the order it comes in for almost everybody.
You have a faith that is yours already and not a trial run for a bigger one later. Scripture says let no man despise thy youth, and 1 Timothy 4:12 does not say wait and it will count properly one day; it puts a young believer in front as a pattern for other people to follow, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a young person's word land on a room full of older ones. What is in you now is the real thing. There is no upgraded version arriving at twenty five.
Nobody Made You the Rescue Party
Now I want to take something off you, and I want to do it carefully, because it may never have been noticed at all.
Somewhere in the back of it there is a quiet arithmetic that goes: if I keep going, maybe. If I stay steady long enough, maybe it comes back round. If I am good enough at this, maybe one Sunday the house is not quiet.
Put it down. Nobody gave you that job. Not God, not the people in that hall, and not the people in your house, who have never once asked you to be responsible for them and would be upset to know you were trying.
You were never handed anybody else's decision to carry. Scripture says every one of us shall give account of himself to God, and Romans 14:12 is written to protect people from exactly this weight, and the Holy Spirit is the one who deals with a human heart, on His own timing, in rooms nobody else is allowed into. That work is His. It has always been His. You are not the last line of defense for anybody.
What is yours is much smaller and much better. You get to love them and you get to bless them and you get to keep going yourself, and that is the whole of it. We do not aim prayers at people's wills like a lever. We bless the person and we speak to the thing in the road, and the difference between those two is the difference between love and pressure, and everybody can feel it, including God.
You have been prayed for on a Sunday morning by people you have never spoken to. The written word says the Lord knoweth them that are his, and 2 Timothy 2:19 is a sentence about God's certainty and not about anybody's attendance record, and the Holy Spirit has been at work in that quiet house on every single Sunday you walked out of it. You were never alone on that step. It only looked like it from the outside.
God called a boy by name in a house where everybody else was asleep. That is not a nice story about a special child. That is how He does it, and He has never counted heads before starting.
So the quiet house is not a report card on your faith and it is not a report card on theirs. It is a Sunday morning in a family, and families are complicated, and the God who called a boy in the dark is entirely unbothered by the size of the group leaving the front door.
You are not the only one, and you were never the youngest thing in that hall by any measure that matters. Scripture says God hath chosen the weak things and the base things and the things which are not, and 1 Corinthians 1:27 is a list of everything a room would have overlooked, and the Holy Spirit does some of His best work with exactly that list. The one who gets up on their own is not the afterthought of the morning. In this book, that is usually the one He is talking to.
I am not going to tell you what happens next in your house, because I do not know and neither does anybody who tells you they do. What I know is what is already settled: your name has been said, out loud, by God, the way you say a name when you actually want the person.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, standing up, on your own, before the house is awake or after it has gone quiet. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so this standing is yours right now and it is not a smaller version because of your age. Scripture is what these lines rest on, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes them land. Whatever He does in that house is His to decide, and however He answers, He has already said your name.
- Quiet house on a Sunday morning, your silence is not a verdict on me and it never was. Scripture says the Lord knoweth them that are his, and in the name of Jesus I walk out of this door as somebody who is known.
- Fear that this is a phase I grow out of, your name is nowhere in this book and you do not get to sit on my step. God called a boy by name before that boy knew Him, and the calling came first for me exactly the way it came first for him.
- Lord, You went past the priest and the household and the whole sleeping building and You said a boy's name twice. I thank You in the name of Jesus, because my family is loved by You and was never handed to me to carry, and the part that is mine is simply to answer when You speak.
