The Honest WalkPsalm 51:6

The Advice I Have Never Taken

This message is for giving good counsel for years that you have never once taken yourself

He is the one people find afterwards.

Not in the meeting. After it, in that loose fifteen minutes when the chairs are half stacked and the urn is still warm, when somebody drifts over with a mug and says, quite casually, in the specific casual voice that means the opposite, "Have you got a second?"

He has always got a second.

And he is good. That is the thing worth saying first and saying properly, because everything else here depends on it being true. He does not fill the silence. He asks the second question instead of the first one. He has a small collection of sentences that actually work, worn smooth by years of use, and he brings them out at the right moment and not before.

"Have you told him that, or have you only told me?"

"What would you say to a friend who said that to you?"

"Give it a night. Send it in the morning if you still mean it."

They are good sentences. People go home lighter. A woman changed a decision because of the second one and still mentions it. He has sat in a hospital corridor with a man for four hours saying almost nothing, which is the advanced version of the same skill. If you asked twenty people in that building who they would ring at eleven at night, eleven of them would say him, and the other nine would say him second.

Then he goes out to the car.

And in the car, at about ten past nine, with the engine off and the interior light going out on its own, he takes his phone out and looks at a message he has not answered for six days. It is from somebody he loves. It is not a difficult message. Answering it would take eleven words and one uncomfortable minute.

He does not answer it.

He puts the phone face down on the passenger seat, which is a thing he does, and he drives home. He does not tell anybody that it has been six days. He does not ask himself what he would say to a friend who said this to him, because he knows exactly what he would say, and knowing it and saying it to himself turn out to be two entirely different countries with a sea in between.

You know that car. Maybe you are not the person everybody finds afterwards. Maybe your version is the advice you give your children, the counsel you give your team, the thing you say to your sister every single time and have never once done. It is not hypocrisy, whatever the accusing voice at ten past nine calls it. It is stranger and sadder than that, and it has a name, and it can be dealt with tonight.

The Advice I Have Never Taken

The counsel was never the lie

Start here, because everything downstream depends on getting it right.

The advice is good. It is not a mask, not a technique, not a clever thing said by a man who does not believe it. He believes every word. That is precisely why it works: people can tell the difference between counsel that comes out of conviction and counsel that comes out of a book, and they have been coming to him for years because his is the first kind.

So the gap in that car park is not a gap between a true self and a false self. There is only one man, and he means it in the row and he means it in the car. What there is instead is a strange, common, almost mechanical fault: the counsel goes out fluently and comes back in through a door that has been quietly locked from the inside.

You are not a fraud, and what you say to other people is not a performance. Scripture says the Lord looks on the heart, and He has looked at yours already and did not come back with the word hypocrite. The Holy Spirit is not slow to convict a man where conviction is due, and where He is not convicting, an accusation at ten past nine did not come from Him.

Here is the actual mechanism, and it is worth naming plainly, because a thing with a name can be dealt with and a nameless thing just sits on you.

Giving counsel is generous. Taking it is exposing. When he says "have you told him, or have you only told me", he is standing in the strong position: he is the one with room, the one with the second, the one who is not the emergency. To take that same sentence himself, he has to move across the table and be the emergency, and he has spent a long time being useful precisely so that he never has to sit in that chair.

Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.Psalm 51:6

The wisdom in the hidden part

Look at what that verse actually asks for, because it is not what people usually hear in it.

It is not a demand for a confession. It is a desire, God's own, for truth to reach the inward parts, and then a promise attached to it: in the hidden part He will make a man know wisdom. The hidden part is not the bad part. It is the part that has never been spoken to. It is the part of a good, useful, genuinely wise man that has been getting wisdom past it for eleven years, out of his mouth and into somebody else's evening, with none of it going down.

You have carried real wisdom for years and pointed it in one direction only. Scripture does not say the wisdom was counterfeit because it never turned around; it says God desires truth to get all the way in, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes a sentence that has helped forty people and finally says it to the man who wrote it.

The reason it will not turn around on its own is worth understanding, because it is not a character flaw and it will not yield to being told off. Advice given is a gift. Advice received is a description. The moment he says his own sentence to himself, out loud, he becomes a man who has not answered a message for six days, and that description sits very badly beside a self he has built almost entirely out of being able to help.

That is the fear underneath it. Not exposure to other people. Exposure to himself.

You were never asked to be the only person in the room who does not need the room. Christ Himself asked three men to stay awake with Him in a garden, and Scripture records the asking without a syllable of apology. The Spirit who moved in that garden is the same One in your car, and He has never once treated a request for company as a demotion.

The breakthrough

The gap does not close by being better.

That needs saying, because a man in a car park at ten past nine will always reach for the same tool, which is effort. He will resolve to be more consistent. He will decide to answer messages within a day. And that resolution is worth about four days, because it treats the locked door as laziness when the door was actually fear.

It closes somewhere else entirely, and it closes with something almost embarrassingly small. One sentence, said out loud, unedited, to God, in the ordinary voice used on everybody else. Not a prayer with a shape to it. Not the version that has been arranged so it reflects well. The plain one.

You are already known all the way down, and the knowing has never once cost you His welcome. He promised that whoever comes to Him He will in no wise cast out, and that word was written for people arriving in exactly this condition, not for people who have tidied up first. The Holy Spirit is the One who takes it out of the category of doctrine and puts it in the category of tonight.

And notice what that does to the counsel. It does not take one word of it back. Every sentence that man has given away stays good, stays true, stays worth having. The only thing that changes is the direction of travel, and a wise man who finally lets wisdom in is not a lesser counselor afterwards. He is the one who now knows the cost of the thing he has been handing out for free.

You are one man tonight, and the door you are opening was only ever locked on your own side. Scripture says the Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon Him in truth, and Psalm 145:18 makes the nearness a fact about Him rather than a reward for arriving tidy. The Holy Spirit is the One who turns a plain sentence in a dark car park into the evening a walk quietly became one walk.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, sitting where you actually are, engine off. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to speak into your own hidden part was given to you and it is not a rank you have to reach. Psalm 51 is where the words come from, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes truth all the way into a man rather than leaving it in his mouth. Whatever He does with the next six days is His to decide, and the welcome underneath it does not move.

  1. Gap between the row and the car, you are not the truth about me. Scripture says God desires truth in the inward parts and that in the hidden part He gives a man wisdom, and in the name of Jesus I open the door that has been locked on this side.
  2. Fear that needing help would cost my place, you have no claim on a man Christ Himself asked for company in a garden, and the Holy Spirit is the One who says so over me tonight. Get out of this car. What I give away is mine to receive.
  3. Lord, You desire truth in the inward parts, and You desired it long before I was ready to say anything out loud. Thank You, because the counsel You gave me for other people was always meant to come home.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
